The rose window in Gothic architecture not only serves as a decorative element, it also has a symbolic function. The rose has many meanings in different cultures. Within Christianity, the rose represents Maria, which is the “rose without thorns" because it was conceived without original sin and also has a meaning in reference to God: If the rose was created by God for men, the rose window is a rose stone that men created to celebrate the Creator’s Light. In India, the rose represents love, the heart, the soul, the perfection as well as being seen as a mandala and mystical center. The shape of the rose window reminds the mandala of Buddhism and Hinduism, symbolic representations of the microcosm and the macrocosm, which are used as objects of meditation to help the spiritual progress . For the Persian Mystics, the garden is not only a place adorned with aromatic plants, trees and streams, the goal of those natural elements was to provide spiritual tranquility, a paradise on earth where the rose, word that gives the name to the architectural element, was considered a source of pure contemplation.
